Liver transplant is a surgery where a whole or part of liver from a living or deceased donor is attached in a patient after removing the whole of the damaged liver.

Transplant from a Living Donor 

The Liver has the scope to regenerate. Hence a donor can donate a part of liver and implant it into the recipient patient. In this type of liver transplant, a portion of healthy liver is surgically removal from a live donor. This healthy liver is immediately transplanted to the recipient. Before the transplant, the recipient’s damaged liver has to be completely removed.

Who needs Liver Transplant

Patients suffering from the following ailments need Liver transplant:

  • Liver damage due to alcoholism (Alcoholic cirrhosis)
  • Malignancies involving liver: Hepatocellular carcinoma, Hepatoblastoma, Hilar Cholangiocarcinoma, etc
  • Patients suffering from primary biliary cirrhosis
  • Long-term (chronic) active infection of hepatitis B or C
  • Patients of Liver (hepatic) vein clot (thrombosis)
  • (Biliary atresia) Birth defects of the liver or Bile ducts
  • People suffering from metabolic disorders associated with liver failure (e.g., Wilson\’s disease)
Hospitalization and Care

Patients need hospital care for about one to four weeks after liver transplant. This depends on the degree of illness.

After liver transplantation, patients need to be on immunosuppressive medications forever in order to prevent immune rejection of the transplanted liver.

Donor Criteria

Potential live liver donors need careful evaluation. The health and fitness of the donor is an essential concern during the assessment. Moreover, the qualifying donor should be in good health overall. Some preconditions for qualifying as a donor are:

  • The donor should either be a blood relative or spouse
  • Blood group of the donor should have a compatible blood group type with the recipient
  • The Donor should be in good overall health and physical condition
  • Appropriate age group for the donor should be above 18 years of age and younger than 55 years of age
  • The donor should have a-near-normal-body-mass-index
