A kidney transplant is an operation where a healthy kidney from a donor is placed in recipients body. The transplanted kidney performs the function of the two kidneys that have failed or diseased, so that the patient may no longer need to undergo dialysis.

During a kidney transplant, the surgeon places the donors kidney in the lower abdomen and connects the artery and vein of the new kidney to the recipients artery and vein. Often, the new kidney will start making urine as soon as the blood starts flowing through it. But there are times where it takes a few weeks to start functioning.

Types of Donors: There are two types of Donors for Kidney Transplant- Dead and Live Donors. Many transplanted kidneys come from donors who have passed away. Some come from a living family member especially blood relatives. The wait for a new kidney from dead donors can be long.

Any patient who has undergone a kidney transplant, must take drugs for the forever,in order to keep the body from rejecting the new kidney.

Who needs a kidney transplant

The purpose of a kidney transplant is to provide a healthy kidney to a person who is suffering from kidney disease. A successful kidney transplant may prevent the need for undergoing dialysis and the complications related to kidney failure.
